Best Usage and Printing Practices
What you'll need to be able to print the STLs this script creates:
- A 3D printer capable of at least PETG if not something more durable, e.g. ASA. PLA is probably not a good idea (unless it's a fancy new high-temp variant) since some networking and compute gear can emit quite a bit of heat.
- Dimensional accuracy will be critical as this is millimeter-precise. Make sure the printer will at least reasonably match the dimensions, and if it's off-scale, make sure it's slightly oversized and not under so any subsequent print will still be usable even if it's not exactly to size.
- Cages generated by this script do need to be printed pretty sturdily. Recommended settings are 5 walls, 100%/solid infill, and supports will be required unless the printer has godlike bridging capability. (The author has found that tree supports waste less material than zig-zag. If using a non-tree support, have the slicer generate them at a 45° angle for better support.)
- Print orientation is faceplate-down, so the print quality of the first layer will be pretty important if you care about aesthetics. Make sure the printer's build plate is nice and clean.
- If rack-mounting something that will be heavier and/or subjected to a lot of movement, such as a touchscreen LCD, change the surface thickness setting to bump up the thicknesses of all the things for increased structural durability.
Tips & Tricks
When printing partial-width cages, change fastener settings on each cage to suit the situation. For example, when using heat-set inserts and screws, print one half or both outer thirds with clearance holes and the other half or the center third with matching heat-sets.
Also for partial-width cages, it is possible to mix cage heights. A 3U left-half can bolt to two 1.5U right-halves or one 1U and one 2U right-half.
When printing two or more cages with allow half half-unit height option enabled, flip one cage upside-down or use the vertically shift mounting holes option to butt against another to fit two 1.5U cages in 3U of vertical space.
